Non return valves, sometimes called check valves, are essential components in pump systems because they enable liquid to flow in one direction while preventing it from flowing back the way it came.
Fitted onto pipes in the pump system, non-return valves are designed to protect the pump from the potential damage that can be done by backflow, if the liquid being pumped is allowed to flow back in the other direction. They do this automatically, using the pressure and flow of the liquid to allow it to move in the intended direction, but blocking the flow if it tries to come back.
There are different types of non-return valve, depending on which method they use to prevent backflow. These are:
• Spring-loaded – where the ‘gate’ swings open with the correct direction of flow and closes if the flow reverses. • Swing – where a ‘disc’ inside the valve swings open when the liquid flows the right way, but closes if it tries to go in the other direction. • Clapper – where the ‘clapper’ hangs from a hinge or pin and opens with the flow in the correct direction, but closes with backpressure.
