Swing Check Valves

About swing check valves

Swing check valves are a type of non-return valve that ensure the liquid being pumped through the system can only travel in the intended direction and not flow back into the pump. Swing check valves work because they have a hinged disc or flap that controls the flow of the liquid. The disc swings open when the liquid is travelling in the correct direction, but closes automatically if the flow reverses to prevent backflow.

This type of valve is available in a range of materials, but one commonly used in pump systems is brass swing check valves. Brass is strong, durable and able to withstand corrosion, even in challenging environments, which makes it ideal for many types of pump in a range of different settings and applications.

Swing check valves are often used on the delivery side of pump systems to stop any backflow when the pump is shut off. If backflow does occur, it can cause significant damage to the pump itself and other components, along with potential leaks.

A well-balanced pump system, making effective use of swing check valves, maintains the pressure and flow consistently, which helps things run efficiently and minimises excessive wear and tear on all components.
